The Grand Game of Story™

This program takes you through a process to explore the personal, ancestral and cultural stories or “mythology” that shapes your life from the inside out. Grounded in psychology, mythology, feminist theory and writing, this unique experience occurs within the framework of stories—writing them, telling them, and using one-of-a-kind tools and processes.

In this program, you’ll learn how to:

  • Decode your personal mythology, including symbols, patterns, and ways of being, for deeper insight about your path and purpose

  • Gain perspective by locating your story in a larger, more spiritual/mythic framework

  • Catalog and revise emotional legacies and agendas in your family

  • Identify the plumb line from social to personal beliefs to see how, and if, you want to change them for happier outcomes

  • See the fiction of beliefs, and experience the freedom to choose your own

  • Change the emotional constructs of old stories that keep you imprisoned

  • Use intuitive ways of knowing, e.g., art, divination, etc., for deeper guidance

  • Reframe your “issues” as mythic openings to a deeper and more meaningful life.

Program outcomes, as expressed by past participants:

Freedom to Choose: “I realized my self-esteem was tangled up in the role I’d been given in the family as the ‘responsible child.’ By becoming aware of that label, I was free to choose when to use it and when not to.”

A More Authentic “Me”: “I saw how my life had been shaped, in large part, by the culture and began to question my beliefs. Although jarring initially, when I was able to see a belief as a story or construct, it stopped being a life sentence.”

“I’m Okay.” “I’d always had a lot of guilt and shame about my past. But now I realize everyone is shaped by his or her unique life experiences. No one’s life is better or worse than yours, just different. That’s when I realized I was okay.”

Empathy and Compassion: “I listen differently and hear people’s stories differently. Now, when someone reacts inappropriately, I wonder what life experience caused them to react as they do. This has given me a huge amount of compassion.”

Empowerment: “I learned how to get underneath an unhealthy pattern to the rule I had created as a child that kept that pattern intact no matter how often I changed the context. It then showed me what to do, at a root level, to change it.”

Reduce “triggers”: “I became aware of how and why my buttons get pushed by going to the root cause of the reaction, embedded in a childhood experience. Amazingly, by revisiting that childhood experience, I reduced the emotional charge with present-day situations.”

Set boundaries: “In the past, I’d always taken on others’ issues as my own. But now, I see where my stuff ends and another’s begins. I now set healthy boundaries and can be emotionally mature in situations. Now, when someone gets upset, I think, “Wow. I hope that works out for you,” rather than think I have to resolve the issue.”

Validation: “Learning about women-centered social orders, I suddenly felt validated for my unique beliefs. I began to trust myself more. I began to understand too, how important it is for women to stand up for themselves and their unique ways.”

M. Carolyn Miller, MA, is a senior instructional designer and professional writer. She was also the first participant for this program. It was the subject of her graduate thesis, and grew out of a personal need to recreate her life after multiple losses. A story and game-maker by trade, Carolyn’s discovery of personal mythology changed her life, her work, and her worldview.
